The Caledon Hawks Midget "AA" hockey team have won the OMHA championships.
In dramatic fashion the team recorded a thrilling, come from behind overtime 3 -2 victory at Iroquois Sports Centre on Monday night.
A patient and determined Whitby Wildcats outfit carried a 2 - 1 advantage with 10 seconds remaining in the game when a Hawks power play goal sent the game into overtime.
Needing only a tie to claim the title, a long outlet pass created a rare moment of open ice and the overtime marker, with less than four minutes remaining, sent the Hawk players streaming onto the ice in a victory celebration.
A clever and expertly executed game plan by the Wildcats almost completely eliminated any Hawk odd man rushes through the neutral zone and deft defensive clearances limited the Hawk down low cycle game. Critically avoiding the temptation to play an individuals game the Hawks resorted to a strong team effort to achieve the crown.
In unprecedented fashion our hometown heroes will be the first Midget "AA" team to have the CALEDON name etched on the Herb G. Parker trophy.
