Caledon Minor Peewee MD Hawks Win the MHL Challenge Tournament Wearing Humboldt Bronco Colours
The Caledon Minor Peewee MD Hawks skated in the MHL
Challenge Tournament held in Mississauga over the weekend in a closeout to the
season as Defending Champions. They won this tournament the previous season, and
they were looking to do the same this time around. They did just that, bringing
home gold medals!
The tournament saw the team play in five games and drop only one. In Friday’s tilt, the Hawks lost 3-0 to a good Lorne Park opponent, but came out like a freight train, rallied and supported each other on Saturday to take their next two round robin games. These must wins placed them in the Semi-Finals on Sunday morning.
More importantly that Sunday morning, a very compassionate player of the Hawks squad brought green and yellow tape to the rink, and immediately each player starting taping their sticks in tribute to the Humboldt Broncos, a junior hockey team in Saskatchewan that tragically lost players, coaches and associates of the team in a bus crash on Friday.
The Hawks showed a maturity in that moment which was absolutely incredible and held a moment of silence in the dressing room before the Semi-Final tilt. The team said that whatever was accomplished on that Sunday, it would be dedicated it to the Humboldt Broncos in tribute to their team members, family, community and associates.
The Coaching Staff was really humbled and impressed by the level of compassion the boys had for this devastating tragedy and for the moment. It will never be forgotten.
Both games on Sunday were tight and hard battles. The squad came together with great team efforts winning the Semi-Finals 2-1 over Oakville and winning the Finals 3-1 against the same Lorne Park opponent in a rematch from Friday!
Congratulations Hawks!! What a great way to end the season!!
We dedicate this weekend and victory to the Humboldt Broncos.
