TriCounty vs York Simcoe Information

1. TOP 4 ONLY
- TriCounty allows all teams to compete in the OMHA playoffs whereas York Simcoe only allows the top 4 teams to compete for an OMHA championship.

- proponents for TriCounty will argue that this allows coaches to develop players throughout the regular season without impacting their playoff hopes - wins and losses during regular season do not matter as much (ie. allows coaches to move players around in different positions which aids in player development).

- proponents for York Simcoe will argue that if you are not a top 4 team, then your chances of winning an OMHA championship are nominal.  The team would be better served entering a tournament that they could compete in during this time.

2. AE & MD -
what is the impact on these divisions as a result of a move to York Simcoe?

TriCounty and OMHA have currently committed to retaining the AE division.  While this decision may/may not change in the future, many TriCounty centres currently have an AE level offering and want to retain it.  Caledon is a centre that would benefit from maintaining its AE programming.  Aside: There has been some discussion within TriCounty of collapsing the Harrison/Russel divisions into a single AE division in order to field additional AE level competition within each age group - it is unknown whether this will happen next season.

- TriCounty is currently trying to create a full MD league to enable additional team competition and allow for OMHA playoff style competition against the York Simcoe MD league. Work to form this league within TriCounty is ongoing and may/may not happen next year.  If Caledon decides to stay within TriCounty, and TriCounty forms an MD league, then Caledon MD teams (that currently play in York Simcoe) would be required to play MD in the TriCounty league.

- York Simcoe dropped their AE level teams to create an MD (non-contact) league within York Simcoe from ages Minor Bantam to Midget.  Caledon MD Teams currrently playing in the York Simcoe league, speak very positively regard the level of competitiveness and drive-time between centres.

- York Simcoe does not appear to have the same commitment/# of members, to retain AE level programming as TriCounty.  As such, if Caledon did join York Simcoe, the current Caledon AE level teams would be given the option of moving up to 'A' or down to 'MD' in order for their teams to continue to be able to play.

3. Drive Time - below are general listings of centres with AA and A programming in York Simcoe and also in TriCounty.  TriCounty will be splitting geographically next season in order to reduce drive-times between centres.  As such, those geographic splits are being shown as a comparison against the York Simcoe centres.

While imperfect, average drive times and distances have been calculated from Caledon East to each of these centres for your review.  Google Maps was used as the reference for these calculations. The reference was taken on a Saturday morning to reflect optimal conditions, drive times and distances.

Note: Owen Sound was eliminated from the results below due to its significant impact on the drive times within TriCounty.  (Including Owen Sound, results in approx the same avg drive time as the York Simcoe loop.) Owen Sound was excluded because they do not include a team within TriCounty at every level and depending on the number of enrolled teams in each loop, Owen Sound may be grouped in either the East or West loop by TriCounty management.  The new West loop was also included below, since TriCounty does plan to schedule some cross-over games between the loops.  The below represents a general Rep 'A'  division, however is expected to also be a fair representation for the 'AA' division.  The 'AA' division will be split North/South instead of East/West by TriCounty however the difference in results should be nominal (division splits by centre are shown below).
